Meet Sandrine

PINK PUNCH IS HAPPY TO SHARE,

A CLOSER LOOK : THE PERSON BEHIND THE ART

Sandrine Monnier

Hi Sandrine, thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for us. Here goes!

What is your favorite shade of pink:

Peach pink, but I also love neon pink

What’s your favorite drink?

It depends on the hour of the day: a fresh fruit and vegetable juice or a glass of wine (French, of course)

What do you listen to while you paint or draw?

I listen to the radio, podcast, and sometimes I put on a vinyl record. I have a lot of vinyl in my house: my partner collects them. I would love to illustrate a cover. Music is really important for me. I don’t have a mantra or quote to motivate me, but rather, a different song. What I play, depends on the mood of the day. At the moment my favorite song is: « The road is ruff » from Wax Tailor and Lee Fields

Where do you live?

I live in Paris in the 20th arrondissements (near cemetery of Père Lachaise). It’s not the center of Paris, but it's a great place to live with a lot of artists and parks, and it takes me 15 minutes by bus to go to the Louvre.

Before, I lived in the suburbs of Paris, in fact I have always lived in the same area.

I love gardening and I am lucky to have 2 balconies. My apartment is full of plants, it is one of my sources of inspiration

How do you stay inspired?

I read a lot of art books and novels. The last book I have read is: The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton and I loved it! It gives me ideas for some illustration.  When I am not inspired, I go out to do some shopping, have a walk, go to museum, bookstore or watch movies. The best ideas come when you don’t expect them and for me it’s rarely in front of the white paper. The problem is when I have an idea, it’s hard to stop working.

What other jobs have you had ?

Before I worked as a graphic designer.

What’s your creative process like ?

I start with pencils on paper. I like to choose my colors at the beginning of the process. Sometimes I paint lots of sheets of paper with acrylique and I choose my color chart for the illustration. I often work in black and white and then put the color in the computer. I have different ways of working, it depends on the project. I have a Wacom Cintiq 13HD for a few months and it changed my process a little, but I’m still experimenting, and use it at the end of my illustration.

With whom would you like to have a coffee?

With all the pink punch ladies

What is your next big goal?

Find an agent. Illustrate a second children's book.
